Jazz I
This elective course is designed to develop an understanding of the nature, structure and meaning of the jazz idiom through the rehearsal and performance of advanced jazz literature. This course provides for increasing skill in jazz ensemble performance. This course may be repeated for credit.
Auditions for this ensemble will be held in December for placement in the spring. Instrumentation is limited to standard 17-piece jazz band: 5 saxes, 5 trombones, 4 trumpets, and rhythm section (piano/bass/drums/guitar). Additional players are included at the discretion of the directors. Performance opportunities are numerous for this ensemble. Overnight trips may be required.
Tuesday Rehearsals
Jazz I has Tuesday rehearsals from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. These sessions are mandatory.
Jazz II

This course provides for increasing skill in jazz ensemble performance and the development of improvisation. This course may be repeated for credit.

Concert Dress
Students are required to wear the following attire for all instrumental music concerts and festivals:
- Black shirt (button-down type; no polo shirts or t-shirts)
- Black dress pants (Dockers™ or Dickies™ are okay)
- Black dress shoes with black dress socks (NO TENNIS SHOES)
Ladies are expected to use good judgment in applying these standards to their concert attire. Questions about concert dress should be directed to one’s section leader first, and then to the directors if necessary. Failure to dress appropriately for concerts and other events may result in a student’s grade being lowered.
